On the other hand, they generally have more relevance to the course you took. At least in LS, it seemed that once the paper topic was picked, which had to occur in the first few weeks to allow for adequate procrastination, there was no point in coming to class, not even relevance to the paper. At least the test related somewhat closely to the class itself.

Bottom line for me: I liked being done with tests, but got more out of papers. As for essay tests, they were the worst, because it rewarded regurgitating facile points that you prepped for, sort of, so it neither tested your knowledge gained from the class nor your ability to spend time researching and thinking out an issue. Besides, nothing is worse than a 24-hour take-home final.
