I think that they, like people here, start from the wrong assumption - that the unwashed (non-lawyers) generally have a developed set of reasonings about politics - and then assume that a political label is the first level of those reasonings.
I think that more people simply don't GAF, (give a . . . .), and answer that question based on candidates, (again, "i'm voting for B, and so I'm an R") and that answer seems to have changed drastically lately - even enough to explain the switch that results in a "polling disparity".
In short, you guys are screwed.
