Late to the Party
Late to the Party, but it looks like my list will be a bit different anyway. I'm more of a classics/noir fan, and many of the movies on other peoples lists (like the Princess Bride) I feel no need to own because it's on my however-many-hundred-channels of television so often.
My list:
(1) Night of the Hunter; a classic and a great one to pop in when you can't sleep at night.
(2) Naked Kiss; to hell with horror movies - this one should will give you nightmares for months yet also make you chuckle to yourself.
(3) Werner Herzog's Nosferatu - Isabelle Adjani and Klaus Kinski; again, everything you want at 2 am.
(4) Hotel New Hampshire - a little bio about my family, with a 20 something Jodie Foster to boot. Ah, Jodie!
(5) Smooth Talk. Laura Derns is great, and Treat Williams is incredible.
(6) (Because just five isn't possible) Rebel Without a Cause. Seminal and Defining.
(7) (Because you can't forget Brando) Apocolypse Now. The Horror! The Horror!
(BTW, not sure all of these are out now on DVD - some may still only be available in Video, and I think my Naked Kiss is actually a bootleg.)
