The only way to be able to have vacations, if you have a viable career that is, is to fix a date months in advance. Then every planning meeting say "Oh, remember I'm out the two weeks in the middle of March." At first, people will stare since it's so far off- but they'll remember. Then when something comes up, someone higher up will step down to cover, or a flunky will step up.
Of course, this requires more than 2 people on the file- Sorry Canada, on the other hand there is job security in there not being a third body.
