The book is about college football. The guy who wrote it is a reporter for the NYT who is from Alabama, and he spent a season mingling with his fellow fans of the University of Alabama. So he was talking about college football fans, not the pros.
And "rammer jammer yellow hammer" is part of a 'Bama cheer.
