Giving a
married couple a knife is a bad omen --- it predicts that their bonds will be cut. So the couple is supposed to give a coin to the person who gave them the knife, so that the knife is "purchased" in a sham transaction probably familiar to most of us.
No word on its karmic effect on spinsters.
