Music recs for 13 year old nephew

I read the request as being music that the kid could both enjoy listening to and could eventually learn to play along with.

I'd add:

blues records of several varieties. People mentioned Buddy Guy and B.B. King. Also consider guys like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker (he'll only need to know one chord, but he'll learn how to use the shit out of it).

Once he learns the blues basics, stuff like Bo Diddley and ZZ Top (and, alas, George Thoroughgood-- bleah) are easily within his reach. Once the kid can play a decent "La Grange," he's pretty much set for poontang through high school.

With a few Allman Bros. albums, he can also use blues basics to work up some slide guitar skills and learn to play a doubled riff as the harmony line. Speaking of slide guitar, get him a older Bonnie Raitt album or two, so he doesn't develop some dumbass machismo about guitar playing.

I'd also turn him on to Dire Straits' first few albums. Teach him how to create a whole different sound by finger picking, and why you don't always need to cram a billion notes into a solo to make it work.

Once he starts getting cocky and you want to take him down a peg, lay some of the Steve Carlton-era Steely Dan on him, and see if he can nail the "Kid Charlemagne" solo and outro by ear.
