Any expenditure of money or resources chosen through democratic expression that serves and advances our essential moral positions is spent for our benefit. We support "the good", and fight "the bad", as a way of advancing our chosen moral positions and definitions. For me, but obviously not for you, your two examples work equally well. Long live democracy, eh?
