I assume CBS plays deus ex machina as well. Maybe the pilot screwed up and was told to take both contestants, and mistakenly pulled the gate away. (I'm still not convinced that Colin and Christie--the intense couple on the 5th season-- couldn't make the flight that would have put them 24 hours ahead of everyone on the way to New Zealand (or whereever)
