Because they are BASEBALL PLAYERS. Should we give an exemption to slick-fielding but weak-hitting shortstops, too? Or in football should we exempt kickers and punters from being tackled if they take too long in getting the ball up in the air?
They need to eliminate the designated hitter rule. Sure, phase it out over time to allow the AL managers to remember how to use pinch hitters and double switches, but it must go.
