Our neighbor had a black lab, who was the nicest dog in the world, but when she bit the baby, she was out of that house quicker than you can say "MR's a retard." Anyone can snap.

Apparently it is not cruel, provided that they are walked sufficiently. I know a number of people with big dogs in apartments. The dogs seem very well-adjusted.
