You won't be disappointed. Imagine -- a book that can even make a badass like Ironweed a little verklempt.
I'm not done with it yet (not for lack of trying -- if I had had a solid block of uninterrupted time, I could've finished it this weekend), and it is about people in poverty -- but I don't see it as a despairing or unrelentingly depressing book.
And Ironweed, apparently Boy George (whom the author first met at his trial) spoke openly to her on the condition that she would tell no one anything if he were acquitted, or that he would kill her.
I've been reading various interviews with her on the internet today.
