But, seriously, I am this close. I am seriously considering quitting after my bonus this year, selling my place and renting something cheaper, and living off the nut. And, even if I do slowly dig into the principal - I will enjoy the next few/several years. Like you say - better to spend it now, and then return to work when I am a decrepit mess, and can't do the things I would do now. I could keel over tomorrow, given my lifestyle, and I would hate to leave it unspent.

I'll never have enough to feed the monkey. I'm just going to keep pushing for the score. People seem to think I'm worth promoting, so the money seems to go up from year to year pretty well. I'll just keep plugging away and making the very most out of my free time until I either hit the motherload case or something hits the wall. Either way...
I figure I'll inherit something someday from somebody and that'll carry me over the final hump if needs be...
