Coincidetally, yesterday I saw an article that Byrd wrote in his autobiography that joining the KKK was "an extraordinarily foolish mistake" that "has emerged throughout my life to haunt and embarass me, and has taught me in a very graphic way what one major mistake can do to one's life, career, and reputation."
Not the best mea culpa, but a whole lot better than Jesse Helms' abiding conviction that he was right to continue supporting segregation (see my post several days ago -- the one club responded to by saying that Helms must have learned this from Byrd)
