No, what I read was based on studies, not on smell or taste. The idea that over-roasting would reduce the amount of caffeine sounds like barista bullshit to me. I think caffeine content is determined by the type of bean, not the roasting method, and may explain why Starbucks' caffeine content varies from day to day in these studies -- b/c the coffee of the day varies.
