He's no great actor, but he never gets in the way of the movie he's in. Is it just his ridiculous Scientology crap and Katie Holmes garbage that makes him such a joke all of a sudden? Or has everyone here detested him like a sickness* since All the Right Moves?

I don't think everyone hates him, as much as they find him creepy and saccharine. Generally, stars are creepy and saccharine, but Cruise is exceptionally so. Its hard to put my finger on it, but when I see him speak, I get this sense I'm listening to an android. The man just comes off like he has no soul. Even his acting is over polished. He's like watching really good computer animation.
I don't hate him. I'll probably even ssee that new movie of his. He's so inconsequential to the plot that you don't need to like him to enjoy the flick.
But he was really good as a bastard in Collateral. But even then, Denzel had far outdone him as a king prick in Training Day. Maybe thats what skeeves me about Cruise. He becomes his roles to the point that it seems he has no individual personailty, whereas when you see leading men like Eastwood, Washington, McCaughnahey, DeNiro, Pacino, Hoffman... they all let their personalities infect the character a bit. They give you a more human character, while Cruisse does his android bit.
