I went to a magnet school for a couple of years in elementary school that was predominently black. It was an interesting experience to be in the minority, like on Picture Day, when they handed out picks instead of combs and I thought, "What the fuck am I supposed to do with this?"
During Black History Month, we had a series of activities marking the occasion. I was offered a part in the play. The role was some African American doctor who had discovered something or other. They dressed me in full surgical scrubs, with gloves, hat and a surgical mask. I thought I nailed the part, despite my hidden whiteness.
