I didn't utilize hookers, so I had to wait a few weeks/months or so to meet someone else, but once I had sex with someone else, the previous relationship was obliterated. I think it works that way for most people. This poor cat has to obliterate his wife's memory if he intends to move on, which I concur he should do. Suggesting hookers is obviously a joke, but frankly, he needs something to at least temporarily eliminate his wife from the database asap.
Of course, I never did this in the context of marriage, and I don't think I loved anyone until my wife (generally, I just played "relationship" for sex because that was what I understood the trade off to be), so my experience might be for shit.
ETA: To be brutally honest, the very worst thing about the loss of a relationship is that first night where you realize you're not getting laid unless you go out and work for it. That is terrific pain.

I don't understand why you assume that the relationship is lost. Lots of marriages survive cheating in the non-soap opera world. And they're not all "open" marriages.
And I don't think having sex with someone else obliterates the memory of the last relationship. That has not been my experience at all.
