Most of the girls you meet in bars are friends of friends. It doesn't get any easier than that. Most of the time, right after the introduction, both of you know that you're probably going home together. Or not. Either way, you know within the first 15 minutes.* On the occasions when I was trying to hook up with a random, I would just introduce myself. If she smiled back and continued the conversation, then I was in. If not, out.
*unless she finds you obnoxious at first and can't stand you. Then you must feed her drinks so she'll eventually think you're charming.
