Huh. Apparently a lot of Sacramento River silt that lines the Bay is the result of hydraulic mining in the Gold Country before it was banned in 1884.
However, I don't think that destroyed Alviso's potential as an international port. The introduction of faster train service and a high-profile explosion of the steamer
Jenny Lind did more to seal Alviso's fate.
