Perhaps the professional etiquette is somewhat different in your field, but in my line of work you can get into a lot of trouble by putting something that was reconstructed from memory into quotation marks without indicating you have done so.
An entirely unfunny joke is, by definition, not funny enough, so I was technically correct --- the best kind of correct.
