As for athletic benefits of swimming, when I was on my college swim team, I was absolutely emaciated. What is strange, though, is that I and one other girl were the only two on the whole team who were not instructed to lose weight. I didn't swim harder than anyone else, swam the same workouts, but almost all my teammates had to lose poundage. The other girl who didn't have to lose anything was instructed to gain a few pounds.
