Tom Perrotta's Election (made into an underrated movie starring Ferris Bueller and Reese Witherspoon), Joe College, and Little Children are also quite good.
Finally, if you haven't read Richard Russo, you really should. Nobody's Fool is my favorite, followed closely by Straight Man and Empire Falls.

Little Children as one of my summer reads last summer. Haven't read Perotta's other books. I should pick them up, NotBob?

Little Children is a great easy, fun read that no one will look down upon in the airport. I suggested it to b_n_b last summer, but she probably never took my advice. All about middle class, suburban angst. She might relate even more to it now.
