sunny, Little Children is a great easy, fun read that no one will look down upon in the airport. I suggested it to b_n_b last summer, but she probably never took my advice. All about middle class, suburban angst. She might relate even more to it now.

Not exactly what Sunny is looking for, but I just read a book called
Magnetic Field(s), by Ron Loewinsohn, and totally recommend it. It's a novel that starts from the point of view of a house burglar, shifts to the point of view of the owner of one of the houses he robs, a composer, works in the story of the family whose house he's subletting for a summer, and then ends with the story of his friend, who's having an affair. Along the way, a bunch of images and ideas recur in odd ways. Not a slog to read at all -- it only took a few hours to get through. I didn't know anything about the book or the author at all. It just jumped into my arms at the bookstore. It's ~20 years old, but didn't seem dated to me.
