Actually, this is just an approximation of my pattern. Always at least 20%, more if food was cheap, more if anything was taken off the bill, more if I'm a regular or if I have any interest in being a regular in the future, more if service was outstanding. I might consider going below 20%, but only if it was a I'm Never Coming Back Here sort of experience.
My proudest moment of late* was when my Mom visited and for the meal she payed for, I checked her tip and she left 20%. I trained her on the wait staff thing. <sniff> Gramma is a lost cause, however.
*C'mon with the commentary on how sad my life is that this is actually a proudest moment.
