Because Nate wasn't Nate, he was Brenda's conjuring of Nate. I took the dream to mean that she forgave him for being such a dick throughout her pregnancy and faced her longstanding doubts about whether she would be a good mother. Since the baby was doing pretty well and she had resolved things with Ruth and brought Maya home, it was time.
