I would make reservations sooner rather than later. I have a feeling all long-term residency hotels even vaguely within travelling distance of NO are going to fill up pretty fast.
That said, my parents lived in a Residence Inn for 4 months after a housefire. They came through relatively unscathed, though my mother was trying to have dinner parties back in the house before the electricity was back on.
