Because dogs are highly sensitive to theobromine and caffeine, and high doses can cause repid heart rate, muscle tremors, seizures and death. Low doses can cause gastrointenstinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea, and/or abdominal pain). But, a fifty pound dog can eat up to about 7.5 oz of milk chocolate without getting its tummy upset and up to a pound without even having an increased heart rate. Apparently actual chocolate poisoning is rare because few dogs will eat enough chocolate to do anything more than upset the tum-tum, but baking chocolate and cocoa are particularly dangerous, so don't leave it hanging around.
So, now that I have relieved your mind of worry, is it that dogs and cats have really strong digestive systems (sounds like not so much), that their shit is not sick-making, or that they just get immunity to whatever is in their shit at a young age, and we don't because we (in modern life) are so hygenic generally?
Where is rimmer when we need him?
