Have you ever read anything by Jasper Fforde? A few of us on the board have raved about his Tuesday Next series. I'm reading The Big Over Easy right now, the first novel in his new series. It's not as dark and depressing as the stuff you seem to enjoy, but it's a fun and entertaining read.
