If you have a cd-rom burner on your desktop and a cd drive on your laptop, you can burn and then try to boot with a Knoppix CD (you can also order a cd).

Knoppix Site

Order a CD (there are other places to order a cd listed on the Knoppix site).

The advantage of using Knoppix is that it can sidestep some problems that arise from, say, a Windows driver, because it is Linux. If you can boot from Knoppix, then you know its a hard drive problem, or some sort of corruption in the operating system, fixable by reformmatting or possiblly replacing the hard drive. Often, Knoppix can let you nonetheless get stuff off your hard drive (although with the backup, that sounds like not such a big deal for you). If it won't boot off the knoppix cd, then you've likely got a motherboard or similar problem (i.e., time for a new computer).
