I wouldn't be surprised if it were the motherboard, although that would suck as I've only had it for 14 months. I actually thought it overheated yesterday.

Sounds like a virus. In any event, if it is the HD the computer should not keep restarting, there should be an error message very early on in the start process. Windows is on the HD, only a basic startup is flash ram, if I recall. You'd be able to easily tell with startup floppy. The CD drive won't work anyway unless the driver is contained in the startup floppy. I had a HD burn out a few weeks back, taking 23GB of iTunes MP3s with it. I had it backed up, but the backup was f'ed as well for some reason. That sucked. I had to illicitly pull all the stuff off the iPod back to the computer (only 15GB worth however). Now I back up frequently.
