They're not really. I think the argument is a knee jerk reaction to the PC crowd who usually leads the charge on these arguments. Think about it. A cat with a job like you and I isn't going to protest or have a sit in to change a mascot's name. We're too busy with our lives, and posting about the topic on chat boards. The people who tend to become the public face of these movenments are generally, well... annoying, whitebread overschooled pains in the ass with time on their hands. So people develop an immediate distaste for the message, which they confuse with the messenger.
Were the message delivered rationally by a normal person, and not a professional protestor, I think it'd get a lot further. Take, for instance, the Augusta thing. I think women ought to be members. BUT, I hate like hell the obnoxious behavior of the professional protestors out there screaming and throwing fits about it.
There was a reason MLK and Gandhi told their supporters to stay focused and not become shrill. They knew the messenger was a huge part of the message.
This, of course, is only part of the answer to your question. The complete answer would take pages and numerous responders. And it'd probably require us to import the viewpoints of people we'd rather not have posting here.
