They're not really. I think the argument is a knee jerk reaction to the PC crowd who usually leads the charge on these arguments. Think about it. A cat with a job like you and I isn't going to protest or have a sit in to change a mascot's name. We're too busy with our lives, and posting about the topic on chat boards. The people who tend to become the public face of these movenments are generally, well... annoying, whitebread overschooled pains in the ass with time on their hands. So people develop an immediate distaste for the message, which they confuse with the messenger.
