I've bought season tickets for the Piston's for the last two years. The main reason is to be able to get to the playoff games, for sure. I spent 80 gazillion dollars, but I've been to 6 finals games. It was worth 80 Gazillions*.
Spend the money. 10 years from now $1000 won't mean much, the Sox won't have been there again, and you'll have the memories.
*I just meant lots of money, not 80K.
