I went to a birthday party at a restaurant without a liquor license a few weeks ago. Everyone was encouraged to bring a bottle of wine and there was a liquor store right next door in case we ran out. I think the corkage fee was $5 a bottle, which still is preferable to spending a 50+% premium on a bottle of wine in a restaurant.

There were 14 of us there, probably 16 bottles of wine. Everyone got to try out different wines without having to a) agree and b) finish up one bottle before moving on to the next one.

Hmmm... It looks like they recently got a liquor license, but are still doing the corkage thing.
