I used to work with a guy whose shellfish allergy was so severe that he had to call ahead and quiz the restaurants on whether any nonshellfish food ever touched a surface on which any shellfish was prepared, and another person's daughter couldn't even be in the same room as shellfish or she could die. I hope Miss Manners has an "it would kill me" exception to the rule.
I'd probably be angry too if someone didn't tell me they had an allergy when I was making a meal for them or choosing a restaurant. But I know so many people with food allergies and preferences that I always ask ahead of time. So I was doubly angry last month; I was cooking dinner for a large group and emailed everyone to ask about food problems so I could plan the menu accordingly. I few people responded and I avoided those ingredients. But the night of the dinner one of the guests told me that the main ingredient of the main course would make her sick. I don't know what Miss Manners would say, but I thought it was rude to not tell me in advance because I would have made something different if I had known.
