It has to be handled carefully, but I think a well timed salary bump can do a lot to stem something like that off. Of course, depending on the work environment, nothing may help. But a "hey I want to let you know you are really appreciated, and we were reviewing salaries and think yours need an adjustment to reflect your true value to the firm, here's a raise" can be a huge ego stroke, and increase job satisfaction such that the other potential offers fall by the wayside, even if they are for a little more money (see Hanks' Devil you know post). It's not about the money so much as being appreciated. That being said, the money is still critical. Just saying "you're important" without any real showing of sincerety gets you about 5 minutes of goodwill.
