Another thing you will avoid by refusing to tell people name choices is the inevitable, "Don't name your child _________ because I associate that name with somebody who is horrible in my office/college/church/whatever." It's not funny. These people are serious.
The only times it is appropriate to make fun of names are (1) before the soon-to-be-mom is actually pregnant, (2) to someone's face about their own name and (3) anytime, behind their or their parents' backs.

Jesus, you are like the last person I would have expected to be so sensitive about this sort of thing. I never had any problem not telling people the sex of my kids, nor telling that I knew and wasn't going to tell them. Nor, for that matter, telling them when I'd picked the names and also telling them I wasn't going to reveal that to them.
