I know where hank is coming from -- I am still scarred from suffering through too many of the 20 minute drum solos that used to be de rigeur in average rock concert of my wasted youth.
On to appplying hank's standards of "live" and "rock concert" --
That being said, it is difficult, but not impossible, to capture the excitement and energy of a great rock show live. First, the shows themselves often (objectively speaking) suck. Secondly, the recording and the mix has to be perfect, or even a great show sounds muddy or bad.
I can no longer stand to listen to anything from "Frampton Comes Alive" because it was overplayed by 1979, but that is probably the best example of a great pure stadium rock show recorded perfectly. I used Cheap Trick at Budokan because it is the second best example, and, more importantly, I still can listen to Bun E. and the boys without breaking an arm trying to change the station too quickly when I hear the first notes of a Frampton song.
