No guitarist I, but wouldn't it, at least in theory, allow for different pickups and strings, which permits a greater selection of sounds from a single instrument?
Why do guitarists have several guitars on stage with them (at least sometimes)? It's not like hockey sticks, where one breaks and you get another one.
That's not to say they're not posing.
