Why not? The article says they'd hire someone to go out on 100 dates in a month (I think). How much would that cost vs. the benefit of re-upping 100 (or even 60) subscriptions at $30/month for a full year? Ten percent? Plus, I'm sure they only pay the "dates" if they actually succeed in getting the "sucker," I mean, client re-signed.
