He's got a thin case, but needs to make things happen to get votes.
The defense lawyers clearly believe the case is weak, and are bringing their evidence out now to show how weak it is. I couldn't ordinarily imagine putting out in the press exculpatory evidence this early on, absent a recognition this case is going to be tried in the media within 3-4 weeks, rather than the several months it will take to get to trial.
