I'm sick of this conversation. We pay a bunch in luxury taxes, which go directly in other teams' pockets instead of being reinvested into their clubs. And Steinbrenner isn't the richest owner in the league. Why don't some of the other billionaires put some of that extra money into their squads? Steinbrenner could easily pocket $100 million and put a lesser team on the field, but he spends his money on the team.
The Yankees are a successful team with a good product. No one said a damn thing when we outspent everyone in the 80s and went nowhere. What exactly is Steinbrenner supposed to do? Field a team using the league average payroll? If the Twins made the same amount of money what would you expect of your owner?
