I was thinking about reading him Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but he's not all that tuned into candy and I'm worried about calling it to his attention and glorifying it. Probably this is silly.
Am now reading him a book called The Tale Of Despereaux. Recommended. Despereaux is a mouse who has parents, but they stand uselessly by when the head mice send him to the dungeon for talking to humans.

Out of nostalgia I picked up
The Adventures of Peter Rabbit and was surprised to (re)discover that, although Peter has a mother, he almost ends up crushed in a sieve by that brute down the lane (what was his name?)
SPOILER
Part of the backstory and the reason for Mother's admonitions is that Peter's father became stew.
