If his father had elected to take his son to a Gulag in the Soviet Union people may have had a different opinion. I think the fact that the father wanted to return with Elian to Cuba showed that he was an unfit parent.

Of course Spank remember, for the left, Cuba is a liberal's paradise. Where guys like Wonk et al would draw the line is if an American mom with childe defected to someplace like North Korea and died in the process and the dad was trying to get the kid back. No way would they want a child brought back to the the land of Bush for fear he would waterboard the kid or listen to his phone calls.
