6-7 hours is going to be unbearable in a Passat. Just write that one off right now. Are you dragging luggage too? If yes, the 5 series may be the best bet, nice handling, adequate ponies and a large trunk. You've been in the X3 - that would be a nice choice except for lack of cargo space. Unless you're stuck with the 2.5L, then with 4 adults - don't bother.
