We lost what, a few thousand troops during d-day? And you think marching all the way up through italy and across the alps would have lead to fewer casualties while also preventing Stalin from taking over eastern europe?
Slave's point is a fair one, although I think it's hard to argue that the best way to defeat Stalin was to leave Hitler in power.

At the time of Normandy, the German's were reestablishing a line north of Rome where they stopped Allied advances until the distractions of the Western Front led to softening in Italy. We'd tried opening new fronts in Italy on a couple of occassions without success. So, without the Western Front, we might have been bogged down until the Soviets reached Paris.
What was the point of all of this again? Does Slave think all French are communists anyway, so we might as well have let Stalin have them?
