Late to the party on this one. I saw this season's AI for the first time last night, and to be honest, only saw the last three full performances, and the recaps at the end, but I'll give it a shot based upon your categories.
Two excellent singers in my mind from last time. Kelly and Tamyra Gray.
Fair to Middling: They boy-band boy (forget his name). Justin, Christina Crisiansen, though she was closer to the top group, and most of the group not mentioned below.
The worst:
The pink-haired chick who lasted far too long, and the rawk girl with the dark hair (damn, my short-term memory is going to hell)
Of the three performances I saw in full:
Carmen -- she's cute, but her singing is fucking horrible. No range whatsoever. Whoever said bad karaoke hit it right on the head, and what was with the Pat Benatar 80's "Love is a Battlefield" right-together, left-together two-step bop. Ugh. Unfortunately "cute" took some contestants much farther than they would have gone last year, too.
Trenyce - nice voice, but I have trouble getting past the fact that I hate Celine Dion. She seemed more tentative than Ruben and had much less stage presence.
Ruben - great voice and also seemed the most comfortable on stage of the three. Charisma to spare and knows how to work a crowd.
Oh, and about Clay. He has a nice voice. A Broadway Chorus nice voice, not an American Idol nice voice, although if he won they would probably pick some crappy schmaltzy ballad (like they did for Kelly) as his first "hit" single that would suit his talents well. FWIW, as to whether he is or isn't, my guess is if he hasn't taken the "Big Gay Boatride" yet, he will. NTTAWWT.
