figure out what you want to spend. buy one of an item costing that much. leave the cheaper stuff for people who are, well, cheaper (or just less wealthy)

[2] o, am I some asshole if I only want to put stuff on the wedding registry that I (of course, I have seen how the registry process works, so I may be exxagerating the level of my involvement in the decisin-making process by tenfold) actually want, even if that means that there aren't a bunch of $30 dustmops and $60 table settings on there?
I've never understood why people feel the need to get a whole new set of something they already have plenty of. Most adults who are in there 30s have a set of pans. If they're lawyers, they're probably good pans, too. Why would anyone register for another set? same for sheets, towels, anything. Silver and fine china I can understand, if only because most people don't have that stuff.

So, I guess my answer is, so long as you get a keg at your wedding it's okay to tell your fiancee to register only for the silver. [ETA:] But make sure it's cheap silver, or you can buy an individual butter knife for $25, so your less wealthy relatives don't have your good fortune rubbed in their face
