Have you read "The Power Broker"? It's about Robert Moses who was a major force behind much of the bridge/highway/tunnel/park development in NY in the 30s 40s and 50s. Other people who know way more about NY can probably expand on that. I read it quite a while ago, but remember it being good. I think he's pretty controversial; not sure if the book was slanted one way or the other, or was attempting to be even-handed. It's from back in 1975 but it's history . . .
